National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW) is
April 22 - 28, 2012
Did you know........
A normally fertile couple has only about a 25% chance of conceiving each month. 7.3 million people of childbearing age in the U.S. experience infertility every year, and 1 million seek treatment. (RESOLVE, 2010)
Women and men bear nearly equal responsibility when it comes to infertility. Infertility is a female problem in 40% of cases, a male problem in 40% of cases, and a combined problem of the couple or unexplained in 20% of cases. That is why it is important for both members of the couple to undergo medical evaluation and, as necessary, counseling and treatment.
Infertile women are significantly more depressed than their fertile counterparts with depression and anxiety levels equivalent to women with cancer, heart disease or HIV status (Domar, Zuttermeister, & Friedman, 1993)
Recent research on the relationship between psychological distress and IVF success indicates that pre-cycle distress is associated with lower pregnancy rates. (Domar, 2004)
